A warm welcome to Department of Biotechnology

The Department of Biotechnology was conceptualized and founded under the Chairmanship of Prof. (Dr.) V.J.Philip in the year 1994 to develop basic infrastructure, and manpower and promote research in frontier areas of Biotechnology. The only department funded and sponsored by DBT, New-Delhi (Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India) started the All India National Stream M.Sc. Program in 1995. The Biotechnology Consortium of India, New Delhi Ltd. (BCIL) also provides placement services to students in various industries.

The Department of Biotechnology has a glorifying history of highly meritorious students well placed in esteemed national and international Institutions. The department was founded under the headship of Prof. Dr. V. J. Philip in the year 1994.

Prof. Dr. V. J. Philip retired in 1997. Prior to his retirement, one Reader -Dr. M. V. Joseph (retired in 2014) and two lectures - Dr. P. R. Manish Kumar (retired in 2019) and Dr C. Gopinathan were appointed in 1996. Dr. K. K. Elyas, present HOD, was appointed as Professor in 2009, Dr. Smitha Bava as Assistant Professor in 2010, and Dr. Anu Joseph as Associate Professor in 2022.

The laboratory led by Dr. Anu investigates molecular mechanisms of lifestyle/metabolic disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. Basic research on the alterations in the signal transduction during pre-diabetic hyperinsulinemia leading to diabetes and cardiovascular damage is explored in this lab. The laboratory aims on conducting epigenetic and genomic analysis on hyperinsulinemic animal models to identify the molecules that play a crucial role in conferring atherosclerotic resistant properties for the management of cardiovascular diseases. The research group studies the stress signaling pathway thereby identifying the genes that contribute to the development of diabetes and other metabolic disorders.

The team is also keen on understanding the Epigenomics of neurodegenerative diseases, mouse behavioral genetics, and learning & memory using transgenic animal models. For the management of neurodegenerative diseases, the lab is working on stem cell-based tissue regenerative studies.

The lab is involved in developing molecular diagnostic kits using lateral flow assay technology for the early detection of diseases.
